Earthly Face Lift

The new colour scheme for the blog is inspired by the 'Earth Hour' - the 'green' initiative that started in Sydney last year. The initiative simply aims to educate and encourage people on how to be more energy efficient. This year Earth hour became a global movement, e.g. receiving Google's support. Google produced the main page in black, instead of traditional white, for an hour in some countries. A similar version is still available as the customised search engine Blackle (thanks Vesna and Tom for introducing me to it; - more info).

Whereas a predominately black screen uses less energy then the white screen (black colour requires zero energy from red green and blues sources, where as to create white, a maximum energy output from all three sources is required - non applicable to LCD screens. Credit to Björn for pointing it out; see the comments), ...the more immediate benefit is for your eyes. The predominantly unlit screen is much easier on the eyes as one doesn't need to stare into the headlights all day...!

Hi Zoran,

while I welcome that initiative, it's goal is more to create awareness than to actually save energy. Your statement that a dark background of a web site uses less energy than a bright background is just plain wrong. The way way an LCD screen works is like this: A central light source emits light onto the LCD-crystals. Depending on their state (the amount of electricity they recieve) they reflect that light in different ways. No matter the color, the amount of light that the source emits stays the same. I think I even read something once that letting no light through (or as little as possible) is actually the most energy-consuming state of such a crystal.

Anyway, I prefere dort backgrounds, too ;)

Best Regard!

True, true... the exact same remark I found from a comment on Lifehacker by http://lifehacker.com/commenter/Kent84/.

Moreover, some of the other comments on that post (http://lifehacker.com/374189/darken-windows-to-reduce-seye-strain) state that eyes are more strained when reading from the off-white surface (any references out there :???).

Though I agree that energy saving is very limited - or as you say questionable in case of ever so more popular LCDs - main point is that I find it easier on the eyes... n as an added bonus it looks better ;)

Btw: are u still sticking w/ Opera as ur browser of choice?
